Abstract: A Madrid, Manuela ha portato Esteban, il giovane figlio, a teatro. All'uscita, sotto la pioggia, mentre il ragazzo cerca di avere un autografo dalla prima attrice, una macchina lo investe e lo uccide. Per Manuela il dolore è troppo grande e ad un certo punto piangere non è più sufficiente. Allora la donna va a Barcellona per cercare di ritrovare il padre del figlio che non vede da 17 anni e che nel frattempo ha cambiato identità e si fa chiamare Lola. Ma la ricerca non è facile. Così Manuela ritrova invece Agrado, un altro travestito conosciuto anni addietro che l'aiuta a trovare una sistemazione. Agrado poi le presenta Rosa, una ragazza che fa volontariato in un istituto di suore. Rosa rivela di essere incinta ma gli esami danno anche un altro terribile responso: Rosa è sieropositiva. Intanto in città è arrivata la compagnia che rappresenta lo stesso spettacolo cui aveva assistito Esteban quella sera. Manuela si presenta a Huma, la protagonista, alla quale il ragazzo voleva chiedere l'autografo prima di morire. Senza rivelare niente sul momento, Manuela trova lavoro in teatro, poi prende un appartamento e qui invita a trasferirsi Rosa, ormai malata e in attesa di partorire. Il bambino nasce, Rosa muore. Ma ormai il cerchio comincia a stringersi. Col bambino in braccio, Manuela incontra Lola: anche questo bambino è figlio suo. Ora la donna può raccontare a tutti (al padre, ma anche a Huma) della tragica morte di Esteban, e così affidare anche a loro un parte del dolore che così a lungo si è portata dentro. Per Manuela si aprono nuove prospettive di vita.
